Easy Access

Company Description:

Easy Access is an early stage educational technology start-up, working to help underserved students access higher education. We are a social enterprise looking to become a Khan Academy for the college application process—a single platform for students, counselors, and colleges that will increase equity in the transition from high school to higher education.

Internship Job Description:

We are looking for a software development intern to help us create a college search mobile app that students will use to simplify their college search. We already have a great start on the app development; you can check out prototypes here. Our technology stack for our mobile development includes: Firebase for authentication, Firestore for database, Go for the API Server, React Native for the front end, and Heroku and Expo for hosting. We are also working on a web application for counselors that uses Firebase and React.

Details & Expectations
We are offering 6 and 12-week summer internships—either full time (30-40 hours/week) or part-time (20 hours/week). We are flexible on the exact dates, but it will run approximately from mid-May to mid-August.

This is an early-stage start-up. The organization consists of two co-founders and you (potentially another intern or two). You will have the freedom and opportunity to work directly with the co-founders, collaborating on what ends up being an impactful product by the end of the summer!

Full and part-time internships are available. Please be open with your available time commitment and your preference for working on different aspects of mobile development (e.g. front-end, back-end). If you are passionate about this project, we can find a role that fits you.

The co-founders are based in Raleigh and Durham, NC, but the role will be remote for the summer. We mainly communicate over Gmail and Slack, and will have regular video calls to check in, brainstorm, and answer questions.

Qualifications
This is a great opportunity for graduate and upper-division undergraduate students who are interested in contributing to an early stage social good start-up.

We are looking for:
Desire to use your coding superpower for social good! An engagement with social and educational issues.

Demonstrated initiative and willingness to learn. We will provide our vision, help with design, and guide you to our outcomes. However, we are not tech people, so we will be relying on you to tell us what is possible and to figure out how to execute the vision. You will be the technical expert on this project, so it’s a great opportunity to get experience in each aspect of the development process. You will be responsible for the entirety of code so experience developing your own project from start to finish is a big plus.

Communication. Living in the time of Covid-19 requires us all to step up our communication skills! We mainly communicate via email & slack and hold weekly or twice a week Google Hangout meetings to set priorities. We are always available to answer questions, troubleshoot, and brainstorm.

Technical Skills
Familiarity with Heroku and experience setting up and maintaining backend infrastructure
Experience programming in Javascript and familiarity with React, React Native and Vue libraries.
Experience with Go
