The Civic Innovation Corps is a new program by Coding it Forward connecting mission-driven software engineers, data scientists, product managers, and designers to civic tech opportunities in city and state governments across the United States.
Internship Job Description:
Civic Innovation Corps members will spend 10 weeks with a host office at the state or local level to use their data and technology skills to make government more effective and efficient for all.
Corps members will receive a competitive stipend, have the opportunity to participate in Corps-specific programming and professional development curated specifically for local and state contexts, and enjoy a community of like-minded, mission-driven peers.
The program is a full-time internship (40 hours/week) that will run from June 14, 2021 to August 20, 2021.
COVID-19 Update: Coding it Forward and our host offices have made the joint decision to have all Civic Innovation Corps members work remotely in Summer 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The health, safety, and wellbeing of our community is our first priority, and due to continued significant community spread, uncertainty posed by vaccine distribution challenges, and new strains of the virus, our team believes that a fully remote program is the safest and most equitable option.
Our team seeks to make the Civic Innovation Corps as accessible and equitable as possible—which is why every Corps member will receive a competitive stipend. Undergraduate, bootcamp, or certificate program students will receive $6,000 while graduate students will receive $7,000.

Corps members will be placed in a government office in one of the following cities and/or states:
Cities: Austin, TX; Boston, MA; Charlotte, NC; Los Angeles, CA; Miami, FL, New York, NY; San Jose, CA
States: California, New Jersey, Utah
Learn and Grow
Corps members will have the opportunity to learn and grow as a member of a tight-knit community of passionate technologists and participate in Corps-specific programming specially designed for state and local contexts.
Please note that we are unable to make exceptions to this criteria. You are welcome to reach out to our team if you have any questions about your eligibility.
U.S. Citizenship or Work Authorization
Anyone authorized to work in the United States—including but not limited to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and DACA recipients—is eligible to apply, though some placements may have U.S. citizenship requirements. Coding it Forward is unable to sponsor visas.
Applicants must be enrolled in or a recent graduate (December 2020 or after) of a two- or four-year institution, bootcamp, or certificate program. Applicants who took time off during the 2020-21 academic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic who will be re-enrolling in Fall 2021 are eligible to apply. First-years who have yet to complete coursework at their university are ineligible to apply.
Civic Innovation Corps members must reside in the United States for the duration of the internship.
Strong applicants will have demonstrated previous involvement in the “tech for good” space, whether they were leaders of a campus club, volunteers in their local communities, or contributors to open source projects. If you don’t have this experience, however, do not let it stop you from applying.
Coding it Forward is committed to assembling a diverse cohort of Civic Innovation Corps members. Women, minorities, people with disabilities, and Veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.
