Internship Job Description:
About the Role
We are looking for a school counseling, marketing, and/or data intern to help us create the go-to website about college specifically designed for high school guidance counselors and college access professionals. Our founding team has developed extensive resources about the college application process specifically designed for low-income and first generation students, and the education professionals who work with such students. These resources are available here and here, and we are looking for school counseling professionals or graduate or advanced undergraduate students with knowledge about the college application process and/or skills in data analysis and visualization to help transform these resources into a polished finished product.
Details & Expectations
We are offering an unpaid, 10 hour per week, 10 week summer internship. We are flexible on the exact dates, but it will run approximately from June 1 to August 6.
This is an early-stage start-up. The organization consists of two co-founders and a team of 3-4 summer interns. You will have the freedom and opportunity to work directly with the co-founders, collaborating on what ends up being an impactful product by the end of the summer!
Our internship positions are part-time and flexible. Please be open with your available time commitment and your preference for working on different aspects of mobile development (e.g. front-end, back-end). If you are passionate about this project, we can find a role that fits you.
The co-founders are based in Raleigh and Durham, NC, but the role will be remote for the summer. We mainly communicate over Gmail and Slack, and will have regular video calls to check in, brainstorm, and answer questions.
Salary & Benefits
We are working off a grant, so we unfortunately can’t provide benefits or health insurance.
This internship is unpaid and part-time. We expect 10 hours per week of work, so hopefully you will be able to find additional paid employment if you need it.
This is a great opportunity for graduate and upper-division undergraduate students who are interested in contributing to an early stage social good start-up.
We are looking for:
Experience (or interest) working in education, and specifically with the college application process. Experience as a college adviser or school counselor is a huge bonus, as is experience helping others navigate the transition to college.
Demonstrated initiative and willingness to learn. We will provide our vision, help with design, and guide you to our desired outcomes. However, we also want your input and will lean heavily on the skills and knowledge that you bring to the table.
Communication. Living in the time of Covid-19 requires us all to step up our communication skills! We mainly communicate via email & slack and hold weekly or twice a week Google Hangout meetings to set priorities. We are always available to answer questions, troubleshoot, and brainstorm.
Technical Skills (not required)
Experience with data analytics and visualization (Google sheets, Excel, Stata, R, Python are some of the tools that we are familiar with).
Bonus for advanced skills in interactive data visualization using tools such as R Shiny or the React D3 Library.
