1789 is a free venture lab and coworking space for all UNC students interested in innovation or entreprenuership. Located @ 173 1/2 East Franklin Street, you will find students, clubs and classes using the space to meet, ideate, work on their venture, access mentors and learn more about innovation and entrepreneurship.
The 1789 co-working space is closed. But our collaborative potential is wide open.
The safety and well-being of our student innovators, entrepreneurial faculty, campus clubs and community mentors is our top priority. Right now, that means our 1789 co-working space on Franklin Street will remained closed for the foreseeable future, including through the start of the Fall 2020 semester. We will reopen the space once it’s safe to do so and in a way that aligns with the University’s policies. While this could potentially occur during the Fall semester, it’s too early to say exactly how and when this may happen. Please know that our team is already working in concert with the University to make the 1789 space as safe as possible once it reopens.
Until we can reconvene in the building, 1789 will continue to be what we’ve always been: an active, collaborative community that’s much more than just a physical location. Through a variety of online programming and resources, we’re continuing to unite you and fellow entrepreneurs around ideas, even while we’re all working apart. Our potential to innovate together has never been greater. Thank you for continuing to collaborate with us – and one another – to make an impact with your ideas.
While future circumstances and University policies will inform this decision, it is likely that when the 1789 space first reopens, it will operate at a limited capacity. This may mean it will be available for only student members to use.
What safety measures will you take at 1789?
Once 1789 reopens, our staff who manages the space will appropriately obtain all necessary CPE/PPE and housekeeping services – while implementing onsite operational procedures – in accordance with University policies.
How will I know when the space reopens for use?
Prior to the 1789 space reopening, we will send an email to our community listserv to let you know our plans. We’ll also post all updates to the 1789 website and social media accounts.
The coworking space offers three different spaces that can be reserved: the main event space, large conference room and small conference room.

Who has Access to the Space?
The co-working space is available for UNC-affiliated individuals. We understand alumni and other community members are interested in utilizing the space and we’d love to be able to accommodate everyone’s needs but priority is given to students.
Are you affiliated with UNC and looking for a unique space to host your next event or meeting in the heart of Chapel Hill?
