Frequently Asked Questions

1789 is the University’s central hub for all UNC students and grads that have an interest in innovation and entrepreneurship.

1789, powered by Innovate Carolina, was founded with the belief that anything is possible when the right people are brought together. With its origins as a Venture Lab, 1789 has expanded its scope to include anyone at the university who shares its mission to build a more innovative UNC, Chapel Hill. More than a space, though, 1789 provides workshops, office hours, events, and hosts classes as well.

While we love new ideas that move the world forward, we are also committed to your development. Just as it is our mission to help student entrepreneurs succeed, we also have built a community dedicated to giving you opportunities to learn and get ready for a job after college.

1789 gives all students an opportunity to be part of an innovation and entrepreneurial community. Co-working at 1789 puts students near other students who might have vastly different skillsets or solutions to problems that can help them. Students can also take advantage of office hours by mentors and industry experts. Innovate Carolina is working with the program to launch a new software platform that will allow students to collaborate with one another and other experts outside the physical space.

1789 is the starting point for students to start digging in to their ideas, meet other people and learn about I&E. The programming at 1789 aims to inspire and educate students. Whether it’s preparing them for the workforce through an innovation internship, giving them an opportunity to network with peers and alumni, or sitting down with a marketing expert, 1789 works to meet a variety of student needs.

1789 offers a large working space, a 20 seat bar, conference rooms, wireless internet, free hosting and even a Ping-Pong table in what might be the coolest office space on Franklin Street.

As of 2019, you can now join this community on the Carolina Innovation Platform (CIP). CIP is the perfect place to network with other innovators around campus, find other ventures to join, or start collaborating and getting feedback on your own ideas. CIP is the virtual presence of 1789. Just like at 1789’s physical space, you can meet with mentors with video conferences and participate in UNC’s venture competitions.
