Internship Job Description:
AI Infrastructure, Model Integration & Optimization Intern — TangentOS
Explore how to make advanced AI technology more accessible and affordable without requiring users to maintain multiple paid subscriptions.
You’ll work directly with the founder on TangentOS, a modular AI platform designed to integrate local, open-source, and cloud-based AI models into one adaptable experience.
**What you’ll do:**
– Research and experiment with open-weight and locally hosted AI models.
– Help test integrations between AI models, APIs, and software applications.
– Explore ways to switch between AI providers without rebuilding the system.
– Research free-tier usage limits, model capabilities, and performance.
– Assist with prototyping AI usage limits, cost tracking, and model selection.
– Compare model quality, response speed, hardware requirements, and operating costs.
– Document technical findings and recommend practical improvements.
**Your project:** Help demonstrate how TangentOS can deliver a useful AI experience through interchangeable model providers, with an emphasis on no-cost and cost-efficient technologies.
You’ll gain practical experience with large language models, API integration, open-source software, technical research, and AI infrastructure.
**Good fit:** Students interested in computer science, information technology, software engineering, or artificial intelligence. Experience with Python, APIs, Linux, Docker, or AI models is helpful but not required.
**Type and Timing:** Part-time, Spring and Summer 2027, April 5–August 5. Approximately 180 total hours, generally 15 hours per week during active working weeks, with flexible scheduling to accommodate academic commitments and planned vacations.
**Location:** Primarily remote, with scheduled virtual meetings and optional in-person collaboration in Wake Forest, NC.
