The Tangent Club

Position Title: AI Infrastructure, Model Integration & Optimization Intern — TangentOS
Company Description: The Tangent Club is an early-stage startup based in Wake Forest, North Carolina, focused on neurodivergent awareness, understanding, acceptance, and support. We’re developing practical tools, digital planners, educational resources, and technology for people with nonlinear minds — and the people who care about them. Our mission is to turn distraction, curiosity, creativity, and chaos into connection, progress, and possibility. We’re also developing TangentOS, a modular AI software platform designed to make artificial intelligence more personal, adaptable, and accessible. Through customizable personas, interchangeable AI models, and modular capabilities, our goal is to create a unified AI experience without requiring users to maintain multiple separate AI subscriptions. We’re early-stage and building toward our first major product releases. Our guiding philosophy is simple: There must be a better way.

Internship Job Description:

Help develop TangentOS, a modular AI software platform, by exploring practical ways to connect and compare AI models without depending on a single provider.

You will research and test local/open-weight models and hosted models/APIs; explore provider-independent integrations; review free tiers, licensing, usage limits, and costs; and compare quality, speed, hardware needs, and cost on a small set of useful tasks. With guidance, you will explore simple model routing and keep a clear record of actual usage and spending.

Your tangible outcome will be a documented, cost-efficient prototype using two model backends, with a comparison of results, setup instructions, limitations, and recommendations. The scope will be chosen to fit available hardware, access, and your learning goals. Some coding familiarity is helpful but not required; you do not need to have trained an AI model or built a production system.

This paid, part-time internship is primarily remote, based in Wake Forest, NC. Plan for approximately 180 total project hours, generally 15 hours per week during active weeks, arranged flexibly between April 5 and August 5, 2027 to accommodate vacations and academics. The project spans spring and summer; it does not require 15 hours every week throughout the full date range.

First-year students and students still exploring their interests are welcome. Curiosity, thoughtful questions, willingness to try things, and clear documentation matter more than a polished portfolio. Relevant coursework, independent learning, or past projects can help but are not required. You will work with the founder through project scoping, regular check-ins, feedback, and shared problem-solving. This is an early-stage startup: expect a focused learning project with guidance, room to experiment, and realistic goals matched to your starting skills.
