The Tangent Club

Position Title: AI Software Development & Product Design Intern — TangentOS
Company Description: The Tangent Club is an early-stage startup based in Wake Forest, North Carolina, focused on neurodivergent awareness, understanding, acceptance, and support. We’re developing practical tools, digital planners, educational resources, and technology for people with nonlinear minds — and the people who care about them. Our mission is to turn distraction, curiosity, creativity, and chaos into connection, progress, and possibility. We’re also developing TangentOS, a modular AI software platform designed to make artificial intelligence more personal, adaptable, and accessible. Through customizable personas, interchangeable AI models, and modular capabilities, our goal is to create a unified AI experience without requiring users to maintain multiple separate AI subscriptions. We’re early-stage and building toward our first major product releases. Our guiding philosophy is simple: There must be a better way.

Internship Job Description:

Help build the foundations of TangentOS, an emerging commercial AI platform designed to adapt to how people think, work, and interact with technology. You will work directly with the founder to explore how customizable AI personas, modular capabilities, and intuitive interfaces can create a more personal AI experience.

What you will do:
Help develop and test customizable AI personas that influence how the system interacts with users.
Assist in prototyping modular software features that can be added, customized, or removed.
Build or improve user interface components and interactive experiences.
Explore how AI agents, tools, and workflows can work together.
Research existing open-source projects and identify opportunities to build upon them.
Test features, troubleshoot problems, and document findings.
Contribute ideas and participate in product development discussions.

Your project:
Help create a working prototype demonstrating how different AI personas can interact with the same underlying tools while maintaining distinct user experiences. You will gain hands-on experience in software development, AI product design, prototyping, and startup entrepreneurship.

Good fit:
Students interested in computer science, software engineering, artificial intelligence, or product design. Familiarity with Python, JavaScript, GitHub, or AI-assisted coding is helpful but not required.

This paid, part-time internship is primarily remote, based in Wake Forest, NC. Plan for approximately 180 total project hours, generally 15 hours per week during active weeks, arranged flexibly between April 5 and August 5, 2027 to accommodate vacations and academics. The project spans spring and summer; it does not require 15 hours every week throughout the full date range.

First-year students and students still exploring their interests are welcome. Curiosity, thoughtful questions, willingness to try things, and clear documentation matter more than a polished portfolio. Relevant coursework, independent learning, or past projects can help but are not required. You will work with the founder through project scoping, regular check-ins, feedback, and shared problem-solving. This is an early-stage startup: expect a focused learning project with guidance, room to experiment, and realistic goals matched to your starting skills.
